A long wait, a small, cramped place, shoulder to shoulder with lots of people, loud establishment, waiters rushing through and around you with stacked plates of food…even with all of this ruckus, I still say, you must go to Jonathon’s Oak Cliff.  All of that chaos, is well worth it, I PROMISE!

I placed my name on the waiting list, expecting at least an hour wait, people were sitting all on the sidewalk and in driveways waiting on their names to be called.  When I decided to order a mimosa to sip on as time passed, I lucked up and found a seat at the bar.  No long wait, didn’t even listen for my name to be called from that point on, just popped a squat at the bar, mingled with some people and was served by one of the craziest and livest female bartenders I’ve ever encountered.  She was really fun, energetic, on top of her s**t and she handled the whole bar, while staying as cool as a cucumber, making sure everyone was taken care of.

I was so anxious to eat, I couldn’t wait for my friend, so I started with an appetizer, decided to treat myself, a bit of a cheat DAY, not meal but DAY LoL.  Danger Dogs.  They are dangerous, because you can’t stop eating them.  You really could finish a whole plate by yourself.  I mean, I almost did.  What they are, are pigs in a blanket, corny dog style, on a stick.  Sprinkled with powdered sugar and served with this smoky honey mustard that did. The. Trick.  The sausage on the inside was cooked perfectly, the pancake was soft, sweet and moist.  If my friend showed up about five minutes later, I would’ve finished all four of them, with no problem.  Licked fingers and all.

Now, the star of the show, what I’ve heard everyone talk about, the Chicken & Waffles.  I knew I was going to order it.  I had to.  It would have been a blank trip in my opinion if I didn’t get what Jonathan’s was famous for.  I had to see what all the fuss was about.  Let me say, it was delicious.  Pretty much as close to perfect as you could get.  The difference between their chicken and waffles and others that I’ve tasted, the chicken was seasoned perfectly, inside and out, juicy and tender.  That is key!  I can’t stress that enough.  The Belgian waffle was thick, had a hint of sweetness and was able to hold a full piece of chicken friend chicken.  Not only that, I went all out and had it topped with Chef Jon’s peppered gravy and drizzled with hot maple syrup.  That classic combination of sweet and savory, it always does it for me.  Made all of my day.  There was not one bad thing about it.  It was amazing.  Now I know what all the rave is about!

A return visit will be definitely be planned for the near future.  I saw so many other dishes in the window of the kitchen, like The Kure (look up the pictures on Yelp, it’s massive), the Brunch Kabobs, even the Club Sandwich looked tasty. For now though, I’m good on my Jonathan’s fix.  Let’s just say, walking out of there “full as a tick” was an understatement!
