Everything is bigger and better in the state of Texas, everyone knows that, DUH!  Well, The State Fair of Texas is a prime example.  Every year, during the month of October, “The Fair” as locals call it, brings a range of exhibits, entertainment, services, concerts, rides and lots and lots of food, fried food especially, to dig your teeth into; drool all over.

The most exciting thing, for ME, is the Big Tex Choice Awards.  Each year, different State Fair concessions fry up delicious and unique foods, to become a finalist in the Big Tex Awards.  It’s crazy what some people come up with in their kitchens!  I’m determined to come up with a creation one day. Really.

This year for instance, the Finalists included: Cowboy Corn Crunch (sweet corn, minced jalapeño, rich cream cheese and a hint of smoky bacon), Deep Fried Alligator’s Nest (rich alligator meat with Monterey Jack cheese, chopped jalapeños, onions and garlic), Pretzel-Crusted Pollo Queso (spicy shredded chicken is combined with a rich blend of cream cheese, Monterrey Jack cheese, bacon, cilantro and Sriracha sauce) and one of my favorites this year, Chicken Fried Lobster with Champagne Gravy.  Let me tell y’all, that 30-45 minute wait was well worth it. I almost didn’t even get to experience it. You know why? 60 tickets, that’s why!  That’s $30!  So, because the fat woman inside of me wanted it so bad, I had to have it, when I went on my 2nd trip (I made a total of three trips this year) splitting it with one of my friends didn’t make it seem so expensive.  Bruh!  De-li-cious!  The fact that each lobster tail was fried fresh and served to you hot out the grease, now that was greatness.  The tails were a good size too!  Fried perfectly.  Sweet lobster meat, great texture, not rubbery at all.  Then, I’m thinking the lobster tail is served alone, nothing else.  To our surprise, it was served with fresh, hot, seasoned fries and this chilled corn relish with red & green bell peppers.  Not too bad at all, if I may say so myself.

Now, after eating, sampling, trying all the salty, savory things, like classics such as a Fletcher’s Corny Dog, the best corny dog “in the WORLD Craig!”, a humongous smoked turkey leg, 3-4 people can share one EASILY, or the roasted corn, you’re definitely going to want something sugary and sweet, possibly fried and accompanied by a side of whipped cream .  I mean you could easily go for cotton candy, a funnel cake, which always hits the spot, but this year, I think I might have discovered one of the best desserts I’ve ever had.  Why have I never heard of a Millionaire Pie?! I’m so upset with myself!  So, if you don’t know, it’s a filling of cream cheese, sweetened condensed milk, crushed pineapple and pecans.  Now, take that and fry it inside two hot, doughy, empanada-like, contraptions and you’ve got Heaven in your mouth, Fried Millionaire Pie.  I’ve never had anything like it.  I think what made it so good is the warm cream cheese, it was so silky and smooth and then the condensed milk sweetened it and they topped it all with whipped cream and honey and it was just A-MA-ZING.  My eyes closed after every bite lol…I was in a very good place while devouring them.

One thing I must say is, and don’t say I didn’t warn you…if you’re trying to watch what you’re eating or on some type of cleanse during the month of October or any program to try and lose weight, hold off on that until November, because the calorie count from all the things you’ll indulge in at The Fair, OFF.THE.CHARTS.  Don’t even step on the scale.  Just enjoy yourself and PIG. OUT!
